Food Hack: How to Spread Cold Butter on Toast

Did you ever destroy a piece of toast by trying to spread cold butter on it? Of course you have. We’ve all been there.

Well, I have some good news for you. You never have to destroy your toast again! There is a very simple solution, which I will now explain. All it takes is a modicum of forethought.

At the moment you decide to make a piece of toast, the first thing you should do is take out the butter. I know, your natural impulse is to go straight for the bread and drop it into the toaster. But that is where you go wrong. The butter is what you need first.

So, take out the butter and a plate. Cut off as many slices of butter as you think you’ll need and lay them flat on the plate. Now you can grab your bread and start toasting it.

While your bread is toasting, the warmth of the room-temperature plate (warm relative to the cold butter) will begin to soften the butter. By the time your bread pops up in the toaster, your butter will be almost ready to spread. Now, take your hot toast, put it on your plate and immediately place your slices of butter on the bread. Do not immediately spread. Give it another minute. The heat from the toast will finish softening the butter. Did you wait a minute? Okay then, now you can spread the butter.

That’s it. Follow these simple steps and you will never destroy your toast again.
