Pork carnitas, also known as “little meats,” is a traditional Mexican dish made from slow-cooked pork shoulder. The meat is seasoned with a blend of spices, then braised or simmered until tender and shreddable. It is often served as a filling for tacos, burritos, or enchiladas, but can also be enjoyed on its own as a main dish. The following is a simple recipe for making pork carnitas at home.
Ingredients:
4 lbs boneless pork shoulder, cut into 2-inch cubes
2 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 onion, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup orange juice
1/2 cup lime juice
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Optional toppings: diced onions, cilantro, lime wedges, salsa, avocado
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix together the salt, pepper, cumin, oregano, paprika, and cinnamon.
- Add the pork cubes to the bowl and toss to coat evenly with the spice mixture.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the pork and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned on all sides.
- Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until softened.
- Stir in the orange juice and lime juice, and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Cook the pork for 2-3 hours, or until the pork is tender and shreds easily with a fork.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and shred the pork with a fork or tongs.
- Serve the pork carnitas with your desired toppings.
Note: You can also use a slow cooker or Instant Pot to cook the pork.
