Some people have no idea what canapes are. I certainly didn’t until I looked it up. So, here is the answer to the question:
Canapes are appetizers. They are small pieces of toast, bread, crackers or baked pastry topped with various cheeses, an anchovy or some type of spread. They can be hot or cold, easy or elaborate.
Now you know. You’ve probably seen them a million times and never knew they were called canapes! You’ve probably made them many times as well and never called them canapes. Well, now you can. And you’ll sound so sophisticated!
By the way, it’s not pronounced “can-apes.” It’s pronounced “can-a-pays.” Must be a fancy French word. Well, la-tee-da! I found that out the hard way. Trust me, you don’t want to ask what “can-apes” are when you’re at a formal event and wearing a tuxedo. It wasn’t one of my proudest moments!
And yes, I know that I’m supposed to put one of those accent mark thingies above the e in “canapes,” but I can’t figure out how to do it! Once again, I’m not proud.
